New Writers Now!

New Writers Now! is a creative forum for students, artists and community members.

This series of staged readings features professional actors performing plays fresh from the classroom, followed by a community discussion about the plays with the playwrights.

Young writers discover the value of sharing their work and recognize that the community is invested in the stories they tell.

Objective:
New Writers Now! promotes community dialogue and respect for young artists.

Join us!
The staged reading is a pivotal moment in a playwright’s creative process. The first time the written word is spoken aloud and interpreted by actors is a moment full of power and magic.  This is when jokes land in appreciative guffaws or fall flat in silence, when a play finds its rhythm and begins to chart its course.  It is a thrilling, exciting time for our young playwrights and we invite you to be a part of the magic.

Through New Writers Now! you get a chance to view the process and provide constructive feedback.  Join us at our next reading!
The Heights of Change
New Writers Now

How can theater help us bridge the gentrification gap?

Young playwrights explore rapid change in an urban neighborhood. How can a community grow while honoring its past? How can the needs of long-time residents be balanced against the desires of newcomers?  Join us for an evening of original plays by student playwrights. The Heights of Change
is presented as part of YPT’s New Writers Now series of student plays performed in a staged reading by professional actors, followed by community discussion.

Gentrification was the subject the students in the Young Playwrights' Theater were assigned to tackle and make into a play. Some students had never heard of the word, although they were living in the midst of it, walking through it each school day in Columbia Heights where their after-school program on playwriting is located. Watching stores go up and trees come down, and neighbors disappearing and new people coming in and the bright lights of Target and Best Buy replacing dingy old buildings. At least some people thought they were dingy.
