Theater of the Next Generation
New Writers Now!
We examine new directions for theater with our April event Theater of the Next Generation. Students from the Young Playwrights’ Workshop
present new pieces that examine the intersection of new media and theater and experiment with theatrical form.
New Writers Now! features professional actors in a staged reading of student plays fresh from the classroom, followed by a community discussion about the plays with the playwrights. Young writers discover the value of sharing their work and recognize that the community is invested in the stories they tell.

The Legacy of Multiculturalism
New Writers Now! Honors Black History Month
Featuring:
My Dream, Marian’s Dream
By the students of Ferebee Hope Elementary School
For Which It Stands
By Kamilia Epps
My Dream, Marian’s Dream dramatizes the events surrounding Marian Anderson’s historic performance on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Students from Ferebee Hope Elementary school in SE Washington, DC wrote about Marian Anderson’s courageous performance and expressed how her story inspires their own dreams of success, peace and understanding. In For Which It Stands Kamilia Epps blends historical research and satire to make a compelling argument about the nature of manifest destiny.
