Production Assistant

Young Playwrights’ Theater (YPT) is seeking a full-time Production Assistant to aid the Artistic Director in the planning and execution of all of YPT’s productions, classroom performances and staged readings.

The ideal candidate will be a strong administrator with a passion for theater, young people and advancing racial justice. They will have strong writing and oral communication skills, a commitment to excellence and a range of experiences with theatrical production. They will be committed to getting results in a fast-paced environment and be able to handle a heavy workload without dropping the ball. This position is an opportunity to work on new plays and engage with the DC theater community while impacting young people in the DC metropolitan area in a meaningful way.

Job Responsibilities

The Production Assistant, who reports to the Artistic Director, is responsible for the following:

Administrative

  • Processing and tracking check requests for artist and venue payments

  • Scheduling and attending production and venue meetings

  • Creating rehearsal and production schedules

  • Emailing YPT opportunities to actors, directors, stage managers, etc. and synthesizing their responses

  • Drafting, collecting and filing artist contracts and tax paperwork

  • Creating artist contact sheets

  • Maintaining artist databases

  • Typing and formatting scripts

  • Soliciting and securing volunteers for YPT productions

Production

  • For YPT’s staged readings and smaller productions, performing production duties such as house management, run crew, board operation, sound and/or projection design, etc.

  • Scheduling and attending actor auditions

  • Assisting with casting actors for classroom performances, productions and staged readings

  • Sourcing necessary prop, costume and set items

  • Responding to needs addressed in rehearsal reports in a timely manner

  • Maintaining and tracking YPT’s costume and prop stock
     

General

  • Supporting and building upon the vision of the Artistic Director

  • Representing YPT in DC-area open call auditions, conferences and performances

Qualifications

We require at least two years of experience in arts administration and/or theatrical production. We are seeking candidates who excel in arts administration, are creative, detail-oriented and who have strong theatrical production skills with the ability to sense and respond. Candidates should have:

  • A track record of working behind-the-scenes on successful theatrical productions

  • Strong writing skills

  • A demonstrated commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles

  • Experience managing multiple projects and ability to take the initiative to create new projects during slower times of the year

  • Knowledge of ways white supremacy manifests in society and a commitment to dismantling racism

  • An understanding of the landscape of Washington, DC theater

Ability to work evenings and weekends is required. Additionally, proficiency in Google Drive, Microsoft Word, Excel and QLab is needed. Experience with a specific aspect of theatrical production  (i.e. acting, stage management, design, etc.) is preferred but not required.

Salary and Benefits

This position is full-time and the starting salary range is $33K. Benefits include vacation, holidays, fully covered medical and dental insurance with Flexible Spending Account, 403(b) plan and more.
